NONDUAL: GENERATIVE AUDIOVISUAL ENCOUNTERS

A boundary-dissolving experience merging sound, color, and space

Overview

NONDUAL transformed the Concert Hall into an immersive generative art environment where sound and visuals coexisted in perpetual dialogue. Created by Albert van Abbe with visual design by Studio ANF, this audiovisual installation served as both standalone experience and dynamic backdrop for a five-week international concert series co-curated with Raster, featuring pioneering electronic artists responding to an ever-evolving visual canvas.

The Concept

NONDUAL explored the dissolution of boundaries between sound, visual art, performer, and audience. Taking its name from the philosophical concept that transcends dualistic thinking, the project created a 'non-present presentation' where generative technologies produced an ever-changing, improvisational experience. High-resolution, sweeping colors undulated across projection surfaces with no fixed focal point, creating a contemplative space where viewers could immerse themselves in the synergy of shape, form, and color in conversation with sound.

The Installation

The core of NONDUAL was an audiovisual installation that transformed the Concert Hall into a canvas of generative expression. Utilising custom software designed by Studio ANF, the visuals responded to sonic impulses while maintaining their own generative logic. Unlike traditional projection mappings or visualisers, NONDUAL created an autonomous visual field that existed in continuous dialogue with the auditory environment. The installation remained active throughout the five-week exhibition period, creating a consistent but ever-changing environment for performances and visitor experiences.

The Concert Series

Within this responsive environment, a curated concert series brought together international electronic music pioneers and local Ukrainian artists. Co-presented with the renowned label and arts platform Raster, these seven unique performances explored diverse approaches to electronic composition against the backdrop of NONDUAL's generative visual field. Featured artists included raster affiliates Kyoka, Robert Lippok, Frank Bretschneider, Kangding Ray, Grischa Lichtenberger, Dasha Rush, and Byetone, alongside Flora Yin-Wong, Aho Ssan, and Zavoloka. Each international performance was complemented by Ukrainian artists including Voin Oruwu, Gael, Burning Woman, S-Z-2, and Nastya Vogan with a string ensemble.

The Context

NONDUAL represented a significant moment in Kyiv's cultural landscape, particularly as it was presented during the COVID-19 pandemic. By creating an extended exhibition and performance series that allowed for social distancing while maintaining communal experience, the project demonstrated innovative approaches to cultural presentation during restrictive conditions. As Concert Hall's first exhibition, NONDUAL established a precedent for interdisciplinary programming that would influence ∄'s subsequent curatorial approach, blending technological innovation with artistic exploration.
